When a book goes “viral” (Hunger
Games, Fifty Shades, Twilight), do you rush out to read it like everyone else,
even if it’s not in your typical genre?

I am going to have to say NO. First, I would rather wait till the book hits paperback. Sadly after all the ebook biz has boomed, I just can't see forking out average $22 for a hardback. ESPECIALLY since my TBR pile grows by the day. I have plenty of books to keep me entertained until such time that it hits paperback. But as I wait, I do occasionally see what the wait list at the library is for that book. Again, if the list is too long... eh I can wait.

I have read Hunger Games trilogy but not during the initial hype. It wasn't until my reading friend read them all and was raving about the books. It was just prior to the movie coming out. Same with Fifty Shades. Sadly I will admit I read them. But it wasn't due to the publicity of the book. It was because again, I had a few friends that read it and convinced me to read it. And I must say, I didn't have to pay for any of the books... thank goodness. :)

But I am a library junky. So if there is a book that has come out and I want to read... genre or not... I do place it on my TBR Goodreads list and look later.

On another note... I have a few books that need reviewing. I have been super busy with my daughters 4th birthday party (Jake and the Neverland Pirates theme). And my reading has slowed down because of the busy. Boo Hoo. But I plan to review them soon. I have SUMMER RENTAL and A STORY OF A BEAUTIFUL GIRL to review.

Have a wonderful weekend and Ill be hopping around soon.
What’s the ONE super-hyped book you’ll NEVER read?

Its more of a genre of writing that I can not not not read... is the young adult paranormal stories. Maybe its more paranormal story lines. Or science fiction. Ugh I can not do it. It is too far from the truth for me... or too crazy for me. My girlfriend really loves those paranormal books and explains stories to me when we are having our book swapping conversations. She laughs that I just look at her with a "deer in headlight" look on my face.

Im looking forward to seeing everyones elses responses.
Non stop... I was dreading this. Ugh how am I going to do this! Let's put the thinking cap on... hmm... Ah Ha! Idea... I will make all the girls "Izzy" inspired bandannas to wear and then they can adorn their blow up swords and VOILA! PARTY!!!

So I thought I would outline, document, tutorial, whatever my design for anyone else so that another mommy in need may not sweat it out.

Off to the fabric store I went. Our local Joann's Fabric (coupon in hand of course!) and I found some fabric that matched. Its a country classic, 100% cotton, easy to work with, and $4.99 a yard (add a 50% off coupon makes it cheap). Plus I needed something that would withstand water and wear and tear.

Next was to come up with a pattern. I went out to the garage and grabbed my freezer paper. If you don't have some, cardboard works too. What is freezer paper? Oh it is great for crafts, wrapping meat (ha ha hence freezer paper), wrapping packages for shipping, etc. I snooped around online and found that the standard bandanna size is 21.5" x 21.5". So for my beginner sewing skills, I measured and cut the paper to be 22" x 22".

Now it was time to lay it all out, material and template, and start cutting. Well luck for me, the material I picked was 22" wide! So it was pretty simple. I laid out my material, folded in half. Then I laid my template on top, grabbed my daughters chalk (works great and doesn't leave a permanent mark) and marked out the bandannas. Since I have 12 wonderful girls coming over, I had 6 yards of material to contend with. It was a breeze. So after I marked my template on my material, it was time for cutting. I cut along my chalk line. Now remember, this material was 22"already, 44" wide folded in half. So I then unfolded each and cut again. Making a perfect 22" x 22" size.

On to hemming the edges. Now for some weird reason, this had me nervous. I looked up purchasing a hemming foot for the sewing machine. I went to my local sewing shop, a super cute quilt shop called In Between Stitches, to inquire about this foot since I couldn't find it at Walmart or Joann's Fabrics. The nicest employee told me not to sweat it. She said fold the edges over a 1/4" and iron flat. Then fold again 1/4" and iron again. Pin and slap it on the sewing machine and your done. Well sounds easy enough right... Feeling confident in my new directions... off I go to tackle this. I pulled out my ironing board, grabbed my iron, and my pin.

I folded over and pinned about 1/4" of material on one edge and then ironed. Now I just "stabbed" the pin into the material and then into the padding of the ironing board. I didn't get all fancy with my pinning. Once I ironed it flat, I removed the pins and folded over again. Once again, I pinned the material down and ironed. I did this around all four sides. Leave a few pins in to keep the material folded over for sewing.

OK lets pull out the sewing machine!!! I get it all threaded and all dialed in. I used the zigzag stitch on these. I liked the look and to me it was a little more secure. I'm not sure if my thinking is correct or not. As I mentioned before, I have 12 lovely little ladies coming so I chose to pin and iron all first. So that when I sat at the machine, I could zip right through them.

How long does it take you to read a book?

My speed of reading is dependent on the book. If I am really into it... it can take me a few days. If its a decent book, then a week. If I am struggling through it but need to finish (I hate not finishing a book even when I hate it) it can take alot longer. Like the "Hunger Games" trilogy... the first two books took me a week to read both. I was so engrossed in them. Now the third book was painful for me to get through. I didn't like it. I didn't like the over all theme of the militaryish drama. That bores me... I ended up putting it down and reading two other books and then with a bunch of persuasion from a few friends... I finished.
Now I am off to do some hopping around and see what some of you have answered.

Snip it from Goodreads.com - "The School of Essential Ingredients follows the lives of eight students who gather in Lillian's Restaurant every Monday night for cooking class. It soon becomes clear, however, that each one seeks a recipe for something beyond the kitchen."

My Review - This story touched my heart. I personally love books that each chapter is about a different character and opens up the door to a little more of that character. This was how this book was. Although each chapter related to the book, it revealed more about a specific character, explaining the way they came to be in this cooking class. Let me say, I was ready to cook after reading each chapter!!! It certainly made me take a different view on throwing a bunch of stuff in a pot and cooking it. They way they made thanksgiving dinner yet in such a different fashion was wonderful. You know how they say people need smell-a-vision for Food Network, well they need to make sctatch and sniff for adult books. It was an all around fantiastic book, loving, great story line, and loveable characters. Definately one to read on vacation or on a beach.Jeanna's Bookshelfhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06643619031004989945noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1006461796601745744.post-9999865860609551262012-07-06T16:21:00.002-07:002012-07-20T16:34:58.463-07:00"Left Neglected" and "Still Alice" by Lisa Genova Reviews

So a year ago I read "Still Alice" and then "Left Neglected" by Lisa Genova. But with her new book "Love Anthony" due to release in September 25, 2012, I wanted to finally post my review about these two books. They have resonated in my mind even a year later.

"Still Alice" was a book I chose for my mom's club (a group of stay at home moms that support one another with life and children) book club read. Oh wow... so many loved it. I in particular. My grandfather suffered from Alzheimer's such as this character in the book. In "Still Alice" the main character has been diagnosed with having a type of Alzheimer's. She is a successful professor, published articles, and has a happy marriage. But soon she starts forgetting more and more all the time. It is a story about her life going through this disease. It touched me alot to hear about her troubles. And having a grandfather that suffered, it was interesting to see the other side of it. It was a moving book and one that I will keep recommending to others.
Immediately after finishing "Still Alice" I ran to the library to see more from this author. I found "Left Neglected". What a FANTASTIC book! It was absolutely by far one of the best books that I have read in a long time. I totally found it interesting to read about a trauma such as Left Neglect. So left neglect is where your brain can not process things on the left side of your body. It thinks that let's say... you move your left hand but in reality it is just dangling at your side or in the case Sarah, the main character, its stuck in her pants! While I was reading, I would look up and try to invision the left side being gone. Or being there but I can't tell. Sarah tries to cope with life and her kids and her husband with finding the boundries of this trauma.
So surely you can see my excitement for the next novel "Love Anthony" which is about an 8yr old with autism. I have participated in this before and now am excited to participate again. This is the books blogger hop from Crazy-For-Books.com. The question this week is...

If you could be a character from any book, who would you be?

Hmm... let me think... I think I would love to be the character Lydia from the books and series "The Good Yarn Shop" by Debbie Macomber. This is part of the Blossom Street series. I grew up crocheting. My grandmother taught me and my mom helped as well. In this series, Lydia owns a yarn shop on a quaint little street where everyone knows everyone else. She teaches knitting classes and that forms a great collection of women with all kinds of personality and story. The entire series is a wonderfully light hearted. But I can find that I can relate. My crocheting is very therapeutic and relaxing. And wouldn't it be wonderful to have a shop that can have so much character. My shop would have to have a book section and a yarn section to combine my two passions.

I am a big fan of "judging a book by its cover" when it comes to books. I checked my local library and lucky me... they had it. It was a young adult series called "The Lying Game" by Sara Shepard.

Fantastic book!!! It was about a girl who finds out she has a twin. After some investigating, she arranges to meet with her. What little does she know at the beginning is this twin has been murdered and she walks right in to her life and has been threatened to live as her twin and not say a word. But intertwined in this story is the dead twin is following her. She has no memory of how she died or some parts of her life.

It was a great way to spin a story. Really interesting. But the best part was how the ending really doesn't end. Hence book two... "Never Have I Ever". Off to the library I go... and look at that!!! It was like it was waiting for me to check out!

A great sequel to the first book. More mystery, more great story lines, more eliminations of potential murders and yet more suspects appear. Really well written. I absolutely love how there are story lines with in story lines. I read it super fast because I couldn't wait to find out what happens. Emma (alive twin) and Sutton (dead twin) continue their discoveries of who done it! As soon as I was half way through the book I looked online at the library copies of book 3 "Two Truths and a Lie". Oh no... there was a waiting list. So I jumped on it and finished up book 2. Lucky me again, the book 3 was available the day I was finishing up book 2. How wonderful!!!

Again the intertwined stories were good. The who done it kept me guessing. I think I know who may have killed Sutton at this point, but not completely sure. Because I have thought a few people may have but then turned out innocent. This is a good series. And it is teen lit which is sometimes a nice switch from some of the other books that I read. I can not wait for book 4 to come out as sadly it is not out yet. BooHoo... But on the flip side. I did get four of my friends to start the series with me. They all enjoyed the series and we had a good time passing the books around before I had to return them to the library. Needless to say... Sara Shepard, you have five new fans.Jeanna's Bookshelfhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06643619031004989945noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1006461796601745744.post-9849419719577952002012-07-05T15:05:00.000-07:002012-07-05T15:06:00.122-07:00Avocado and Tomato SaladWhile on Pinterest the other night, I found a great looking "mini avocado salad" recipe. But sadly as you clicked on the link, there wasn't the recipe to be found. Several people asked in the comment area for the recipe as they couldn't find it either... whew not just me. So looking in my kitchen, I had avocados (thank you Safeway for the 4 for $5 sale) and I had home grown tomatoes... so I thought... I could do this myself. I grabbed the items I thought I needed...
I cut up my avocado and my tomatoes. I had home grown cherry tomatoes and early girl tomatoes ready to go.

Cut one avocado
Cut as many tomatoes as desired
Add teaspoon of extra light virgin olive oil
Garlic salt to taste
Pepper to taste
Lemon juice to taste (sprinkle around)
I am not one to normally read a young adult novel. But this one was really good. It was recommended to me for my MOMS Club book club that I coordinate. My friend is not one who normally recommends books. She, like many other people, gets nervous about recommending books for fear that what she liked will not be the same as what other people like to read. She rented this on her kindle ereader and recommended it to me. I checked it out from the library, as my Kindle Fire is on the way, assuming that it is either being built or built and awaiting shipping. I really enjoyed it.

"Someone Like You" is about a pair of teen girls, 15 and 16, who are best friends. Halley, the 15yr old, goes to camp for two weeks of the summer and her friend Scarlett, is home working at the market and spending time with her boyfriend. When tragedy strikes and Scarlett's boyfriend is killed in a motorcycle accident, Halley comes home from camp early to comfort her best friend. The girls start school again and things start changing. Halley befriends the school bad boy which is also Scarlett's deceased boyfriend best friend. At the same time Halley and Scarlett discover that Scarlett is pregnant with her boyfriends' baby. The girls have hurdles to jump and decisions to make. Will Halley become a "bad girl" herself or stay the good girl that she is. Will Scarlett keep the baby or have an abortion like her mother wants her to do.

I really enjoyed the book. I must admit there were times that I was thinking "oh come on... really??" But then I had to remember, I am much older than the typical reading age for this type of book. It was a good story, good plot, captivating characters, and good intentions for the book. There were a few tiny stories that were started that I would have like to see where those had gone. But doesn't every book have those. :) I certainly will pick up another book my Sarah Dessen! It was a nice book to read that wasn't my typical Tudor style, or "who done it" style, or sappy romance style.

Ahhh as of tomorrow 16 days till my Kindle Fire! I have read so many books within that time too. Some really great ones. I will be getting to those reviews soon. But to get me into the swing of things, I will start off my reborn blogging my books with this weeks WWW Wednesdays from the blog Should Be Reading
• What are you currently reading?
I am currently reading Alice Hoffman's "The Third Angel". It is my first read of hers. I have heard some very good reviews about her books. So far it is an "Eh OK" read. I am not overly impressed but not utterly bored that I would put it down.

I am also reading (since I have usually two or more books going on at the same time) "Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie" by Alan Bradley. Ok I was so so excited to read this book. My sister-in-law told me that this series was great. Oh my... I can not get into this book at all!!! I am about half way through and it is so easy for me to put down. But I can never abandon a book that I have started so I will plow through and hopefully get it done. You could see this same book on my "currently reading" next week too.

• What did you recently finish reading?
I just finished Ree Drummond's "The Pioneer Women: Black Heels to Tractor Wheels". I got this book recommendation off of another "mommy blog" that I follow. It was really good. Ree Drummond has since started a show on Food Network. She also has a blog "The Pioneer Woman" which has great food ideas, gardening ideas, and stories about her life with her family.

• What do you think you’ll read next?
Next on my list and I just picked up from the library today, is a book recommendation from a friend of mine. It is "The Story of a Beautiful Girl" by Rachel Simon. It sounds good and I'll let you know how it is.
Victoria Dawson was always referred to as "big girl" by her father. He refereed to her also as the "tester cake", after her sister was born, perfect little Gracie. All though her school years she consumed herself with her sister. Her parents were self absorbed in their own lives. Victoria's own mother lived for her father, to do what made him happy, and to under mind and intimidate her oldest daughter with comments and remarks about Victoria's weight. All though school, high school and college, Victoria was a weight yo-yo. And even after landing her dream job teaching at a prestigious private school in New York, it didn't satisfy her parents. Sadly her dating life was slim to none. And then the shocking blow, her perfect sister, wants to marry the first boy she meets in college, whom is a copy image of their father.

Will Victoria convince her sister not to marry? Will she ever tackle her weight problem? Will she ever marry herself?

Sadly this book was a big flop for me. I couldn't wait for it to end. It seemed as though all Victoria talked about was her weight, over and over and over. Made issues out of nothing. And when she could change, she didn't or fell off the wagon. And the descriptions of her weight went on for pages and pages on end. Gracie seemed a little too perfect. Her parents were really mean. It was not one of the best novels that I have read by Danielle Steel.
Ahh there can't only be one!!! I read too much and love too many authors to only be one. But IF I could only have one, then it would be... Jodi Picoult. I am reading alot of her books right now. Kind of going through a "Picoult" fetish. She is such a good writer and has such a interesting way of telling a story and then throwing you little shockers in the middle of what YOU thought would be the ending. It makes me want to read another book of hers just to she how she twisted that book, and then another and then another. But... I would also like to meet Debbie Macomber, Dean Koontz, J. K. Rowling, and Cecelia Ahern.
It was just a fantastic book. The kind that warms your heart and makes you feel connected to the characters. I am a fan of Debbie Macomber anyway, but this book has to be one of my favorites. If you are looking for a good, feel good kind of book, I might suggest looking into this one. And you could probably find it available at most libraries. But first I wanted to do a WWW Wednesday via http://shouldbereading.wordpress.com/. It is a great blog that has daily inspirations or prompts to help you share your books and your blog with everyone. And for my WWW Wednesday....

"What are you currently reading?" - I have just cracked the book (literally minutes ago) to a Danielle Steel novel "Big Girl". Per the first paragraph of the inside cover... "In this heartfelt and incisive new novel, Danielle Steel celebrates the virtues of unconventional beauty while exploring deeply resonant issues of weight, self-image, sisterhood, and family." I can not wait to dive in and enjoy this book!

"What did you recently finish reading?" - I just finished, again maybe an hour ago, a FANTASTIC book by Brenda Youngerman, "Public Lies". I finished it in about a day and a half, and that is saying something since I have a almost 3 yr old with a busy schedule. It is the sequel to "Private Scars". It was an amazing book that I will be doing a review on shortly. Certainly two books you might think about putting on the "to be read" list. Suzanne, the main character, must decide if she can to return to her old life and face her drug addicting, alcoholic husband but yet protect their precious kids.

"What do you think you’ll read next?" - Up next on the reading stack is a new book that I just got from "Blogging for Books" for a review, "The Corruptible" by Mark Mynheir. I am excited to get into this suspense thriller. The main character, Ray Quinn, is a retired ex-homicide detective, who takes on a new job that find him looking at the fine line between good guys and bad guys.

"If you were given the chance to spend one day in a fictional world (from a book), which book would it be from and what would that place be?"

Oh this is a hard question... and a good one. I have a few that I could spend the day with.

First would be in the book of "Pillars of the Earth" by Ken Follet. I find that time frame interesting with all the royalness (no this has nothing to do with all the hype of the royal wedding, sorry). I find all the primitive stuff interesting. The building of the church, the interaction of the people of the town and the royal families and priors. I loved that book and I think that it would just be fun, for one day, to experience that life, the simplicity.

Second would be a more recent book, "Private Scars" by Brenda Youngerman. I just recently reviewed this book and I would love to spend the day with the main character, Nancy. She seem to just need a HUG! She needs someone to just whisk her away for a few day into a safe haven and give her a break from her life.

I also would love to be in the Debbie Macomber book "The Good Yarn". I am a huge and passionate person for crocheting. It is so very relaxing to sit and create something with a needle and yarn for someone special. To go and sit and listen to the store "The Good Yarn", listen to all the beautiful characters in the book, to see a store filled with yarn and not be just in a section in Michaels or Joann's. To learn from other lovely ladies about their live or their crafty projects would be fun.
Pg 304

" "I eat everything," I told her. I chopped cucumber, thinking how ridiculous it was that I did not know what vegetables my own mother would eat in a tossed salad. I couln't prepare her coffee, either, or conjure her shoe size, or tell a stranger which side of the bed she slept on. "You know, " I said, "if your lives had been a little different, I wouldn't have to be asking these things."

Hope you enjoyed my little Tuesday teaser. I hope it inspires you to read her books. I am almost done with the book so the review is coming shortly. For all my Tuesday Teaser friends, please feel free to follow me and I will return the favor. I love finding new blogs and books to read.
Private Scarsby Brenda Youngerman
iUniverse, 2006, 172 pages
Paperback, $13.95
ISBN: 978-0-595-40292-5
E-Book also available

My Rating - 4 Stars! Fantastic!

Private Scars... What a great read it was! Nancy is one of the strongest characters I have come across in all my reading. The story takes place when Nancy was younger with her best friend, Sara. They are basically attached at the hip. But Nancy is the smart one in the pair and get accepted into college in Oregon and has to leave Sara behind to attend a community college. College for Nancy becomes extremely hard after hearing devastating news and becomes even worse when she is attacked on campus. After one semester, she returns home to the town of Greenbrair.

Nancy makes a new life for herself in, attending community college, working at Rite Aid, and making a few friends. Then she meets him... Vince... a man she falls in love with. Their dates were a little awkward, she had to pay for their dinner on the first date, he either didn't show or didn't call, but she was in love. There was always a good reason... right? He wooed her and won over her parents. Although she occasionally had doubts, but those doubts vanished when he was kind, loving, and caring. Within a short amount of time they were married and starting a life together. Nancy had no idea that Vince had a different side of him. Through out her marriage, kids, jobs, would she be able to survive?

What I liked most about the book was the short yet descriptive chapters. Not the kind that take up three chapters to tell the scene. Brenda has a unique way of telling you everything you needed to know and more but in a direct route. I have a complete picture of what Nancy looks like, acts like, and yet it didn't take long. Same with Vince. I can completely picture him. And I am completely amazed that Brenda was able to tell this fantastic, heart wrenching story in so few pages. And I don't feel like I am missing anything. I was connected to the characters. There were times that I could have smacked Nancy if I could only reach into the book. And times I wanted to smacked Vince, again if i could only get in the book.

I can not wait to see what happens in the sequel, "Public Lies". I am anxious to to jump into reading it, but I want to wait and let the freshness of "Private Scars" set in some more. Thank you, Brenda Youngerman, for sharing your books with me to review. I was excited to review them and I was not disappointed!
